OC Girls Volleyball had a very successful final round against St John’s, winning five of six games.
The Year 8 Supp team also played against Canterbury in what turned out to be a premiership deciding game. As hard as the girls fought to win this final, they were matched and narrowly defeated by a determined opposition. This team has grown throughout the season, improving in every game and almost coming away with a premiership in, for most of the team, their first season.
The Year 7s played another thrilling match, this time getting their first 3-nil win of the season. The improvement throughout the term as seen this team struggle to serve the ball through to playing in six (from eight games) tie-breaking sets, only to narrowly lose in five of these. Their coach is very much looking forward to next season where she can continue their skills and be on the winning edge of the ledger.
The Year 8s played a must-win game if they wanted to come away with the premiership, and this spurred them onto one of the best games of their season. Digging, setting and spiking were at the forefront of the win, with dominant serving putting the opposition under immense pressure. A 3-nil win saw the girls walk off the court with the premiership under their belt. Well done girls.
The Year 9s continued to play very well, but allowed some silly mistakes to creep in the second and third set to go down 1:2 in their final game of the season. Although a loss, they had done enough throughout the season to secure second place on the ladder, a huge improvement over last year, and some more improvement to make next year.
The Year 10s easily accounted for their opposition, and ultimately secured their second place on the ladder. Missed opportunities from last week’s game cost them the premiership, however, with many girls making their debut for OC Volleyball this year, the coaches were impressed with how well they have gelled and played all season.
The Seconds secured the premiership with a dominant display of Volleyball against St John’s. The 3-nil win was one of the quickest games played throughout the season, however, gave some good practice for the girls before the end of year national championships. Well done on your win girls.
The Firsts, with many playing their last game for OC, were determined to go out as winners. With the fire power to back up their plans, they set out from early in the match to give St John’s a lesson on what Volleyball is. This culminated in the final set being a 25-nil score line, with Erica Allen serving all 25 points in a row, a feat that has never been done once before in the history of OC Volleyball.
The Volleyball fraternity would like to extend a much loved thank you to those girls who have now played their last game; Erica Allen, Lana Ibbott, Tess Photinos, Emily Preston and Julia Schultz. Your hard work and dedication throughout the last five years of OC Volleyball is very much appreciated and applauded.
