Round 1 Wash-up – St John’s

The Redbacks started off the Trimester 2 campaign with an impressive start. Winning 21 games and losing only four is a just reward to the Players, Coaches and Managers for some excellent preseason work and programs put in place over the past few seasons. There is an outstanding culture and buzz around the campus of commitment to the cause, desire to improve, willingness to learn and respect for the game.

An unseasonal cyclone hit Brisbane in 2015 when we were due to play St John’s so there was a sense of mystery around how we would play against them. We won 17 games, drew two and lost six against St John’s in 2014 so we suspected we probably would finish on top. St John’s have been pushing hard in recent times through coaching programs and fostering a sporting culture, however, we were too strong across the board and we were able to improve on the 2014 result.

The Hockey Teams all jagged four wins, which was an improvement on the two wins and two draws in 2014. The Netballers won nine games and lost 10, the same as in 2014. The Rugby Players won three games this season and in 2014 we won just the two games, so there was an improvement in Rugby. The First XV were involved in a scrappy and error-filled game, which starved any flow we tried to generate. The Tennis Players had a very successful round winning five and losing just the one game. This was an improvement from the four wins and two losses in 2014.

Congratulations on a successful start to the season, young Redbacks!
