The Interhouse Athletics Carnival was held on a glorious winter’s day on Tuesday 18 July. The Carnival was postponed from the final two days of Term 2 because of severe wet weather, and it was well worth the wait.
House events at OC are well-supported and enjoyable occasions. A number of students look forward to the competition, while others look forward for the chance to cheer on their friends and House. A number of Year 12 students are involved in fund-raising efforts, running a popular BBQ led by their Year Coordinator, Ms Bown. The burgers and cold drinks are well received by the staff and students.
On the track, the effort made by the students was clearly evident to any spectator. The strain on the faces of many students was all about competing to the best of their ability for their House. The students competed in the 100m, 200m and 800m at the carnival, with the 400m, 1500m and 4x100m relays run at lunch times. All field events – triple jump, high jump, long jump, shot put, discus and javelin – were held during the carnival itself.
This carnival was the 27th House Athletics Carnival and new records were achieved. The 12 years age group was introduced when the Middle School was formed in 2014 and the 12 years records started then. Nena Williamson performed exceptionally well in the 12 years age group, claiming three records. Tanner Elliott threw the javelin further than any OC athlete in history. The left-armer wowed everyone with his massive hurl. The records broken are listed below:
The overall winning House will be announced on Assembly in the coming weeks.
