Junior TAS Sport (Week 7 Term 4)

The final round of Junior TAS Sport took place last Saturday, with Round 5 of tennis proving to be one of the best of the season. I had the pleasure of being out at Faith Lutheran College to watch our OC Red team play against the best players from Faith’s Junior School. Playing against older and more experienced opponents was always going to be a tough ask, but the persistence and resilience shown was typical of OC students. Jacob Farries’ had an intelligent, mature and gritty win over an opponent who possessed some very heavy ground strokes. Jacob calmly returned everything that came his way to record a 6 – 2 win. Another highlight was the courageous display by our doubles pairing of Aniketh Thalluri and Zak Hurley. They were pitted against some incredibly talented boys and managed to take a game away from them. They should both be very proud of their efforts. Matisse Grant started the day slowly, but once she got going she showed what a great talent she will be heading into Year 5 in 2017.

These intangible qualities of determination, spirit, resilience and maturity are something I have enjoyed watching develop in our young Redbacks all year. It was great to finish 2016 on such a positive note.

All three of our other Junior TAS teams came away with impressive victories. OC Blue knocked over Sheldon College’s top team 30 – 18. OC White and Gold both played at Redlands Lawn Tennis Association and recorded 31 – 16 and 30 – 18 victories over Sheldon and Faith respectively.

The Internal Competition finished up last weekend as well. I would like to thank Matthew O’Neill and his team of coaches for ensuring this ran smoothly over the last five weeks. It is a great development and participation initiative which allows students to learn about tennis and improve their skills in a safe environment.

Finally, I would like to thank our coaching team of Mrs Gillian Williams, Mrs Maria Forster, Ms Catherine Herzig and Ms Maryke Van Eck for all the work you have done with the students this term. Your professionalism and organisation have made the 2016 edition of Junior School Tennis a most enjoyable one.
